Guildford Marine Optimist Open Meeting - 5 September 09
The 2009 Papercourt Summer Optimist Open Meeting was held on the 5th
September and with 117 entries across Main and Regatta fleets. The
mornings races were held in a light Westerly that challenged the race
teams and competitors alike while the two afternoon races were sailed
in a more steady South Westerly that blew down the lake. The Main
Fleet proved to be a tight contest with Murray Hampshire of Papercourt
winning by one point from Ben Batton (RLYC). However, the result was
in doubt until the final beat with Murray's 5th in the last race and
two 1sts to count vs Ben's 3,3,2 (he was the only competitor to
finish in the top 10 in every race). Had Ben gained the lead in the
last race, he would have won. Also in contention was Fraser Woodley
with two 2nds in the opening races but a black flag and 19th ruled
him out of contention. 3rd overall was Burnham's Jake Braybrook with
an 8,2,3 and the furthest travelled. Robert Masterman of Papercourt
was 4th (4,5,5) and Simon Hamment also from Papercourt was 5th
(9,6,1). First lady Jennifer Cropley from Warsash/Burghfield was 6th
overall (4,9,4). In the Regatta fleet, Rhiannon Flack from Spinnaker
counted an impressive three 1sts with Sophie Heritage from Yarmouth
4,2,2 for 2nd overall. Emma Handley from Papercourt was 3rd overall with
a race win and an 8,3.
