Papercourt Weather

Solo Open at PSC sponsored by Guildford Marine - 27/6/10

Judith Massey sweeps the board at her home club with Mike Murphy (also of Papercourt) holding on to second place.

In spite of the forecast of light winds and high temperatures coupled with the England v Germany match in the afternoon, a fleet of 16 boats enjoyed the challenging conditions. Race Officer Graham Williamson had his work cut out to find courses to suit the shifting wind.

In the first race, a triangular course was set, but with a temporary shift a running start was necessary. Mike Murphy and Mike Ball were both over and had to restart. An early leader was Jonathan Farnell and he held on to this for the whole first lap. Mike Murphy by then had made up his poor start and took the lead on the second lap only to lose it, when in covering Judith Massey, he let her through on the econd beat and Judith then held on to her lead to the finish.

In race 2, the course was changed to windward/ leeward to create more strategic opportunities. Roger Puttock got off to a good start only to sail into a hole and lose his advantage. The wind favouring the pin-enders. By the first mark Mike Ball had worked his way into the lead with Mike Murphy second. On the second lap, with positions changing in the fickle wind, Judith Massey made the front on the downwind leg and with the rest of the fleet closing on the leader, she crossed the line in first place with Mike Murphy second and Peter Withrington (Littleton S C) third. A just reward for Peter who had battled his way cross-country from Beaconsfield.

A fine lunch was provided by Anne Smith and her helpers but with what little wind there was dying, the afternoon races looked problematical. However it was agreed to try although for some the football seemed more attractive.

Race 3 proved to be the last and with a very soft breeze on a small area of the lake, the race officer laid the best course he could but immediately had to shorten it. Judith Massey again went into an early lead closely followed by Jonathan Farnell, Peter Withrington, Mike Murphy and Frank Brown and overlapping, they finished in that order.

Our thanks to Guildford Marine for sponsoring the event with very generous prizes, to everyone who took part and to those who gave such generous help.
