Boat stickers - reminder of email sent to members 15 Dec 09

Dear All,

My big problem is STICKERS. (..."what a life" you would think).

Over the past few years it has become evident that for the size and scope of the club a better way of managing our club records was needed. Over the past few months my predecessors, Mike and Anne Bulmer, and the new Membership Official, Greig Wishart, have been putting a lot of effort into reconciling all our club records and migrating the old Excel and Access files to a new commercial database designed specifically for managing sailing clubs.

When complete the new system will ensure that all our records are kept up to date at all times with a minimum effort. Of course even the best system money can buy is worth nothing if everybody in the Club is not behind it. This is particularly important because no paid staff are involved in the process. All we ask of our members is very simple and can be synthesised in one word: "STICKERS".

At the last work party we were overwhelmed by the number of boats with an out of date sticker, difficult to find sticker, smudged sticker or no sticker at all.  All this makes managing the boat park extremely difficult, without a sticker can take days of 'detective work' just to re-trace the owner of one single misplaced boat...and we have more than 500 in the club!

To make this new system work for us we will have to be draconian in the way we apply the existing Club Rules about berthing (...nothing personal).

There will be a period of "grace" between now and the New Year where every effort will be made to inform everybody of the new system and new approach. By the end of January everybody will have already reapplied for their own berths and received the new coloured sticker for their boats.  That will be the cut off point, Papercourt Berthing Rules will be applied firmly from there onward.

To comply all that is needed is a boat, correctly parked in the allocated berth, and a visible sticker . (...nothing new really...and you don't even need to lick the sticker, glue is provided!)

Kind Regards   Gino Gartner
