Race report HISC Oppy Open 26/27 June 2010

Twenty four PSC helms braved sunshine, warm sea and gentle cooling breezes to compete in the 2010 Hayling Island Optimist Open Meeting. PSC helms were split evenly between the main and regatta fleets which had an impressive combined entry of 117 boats. With near perfect conditions on both days the full series of six races was completed in both fleets. The regatta fleet raced within view of the hard pressed beach and support crews who spent both days applying sun tan lotion and rehydrating with Pimms while viewing the races through binoculars. The main fleet disappeared over the horizon leaving anxious parents waiting for news of results until they returned at the end of the day.

PSC helms achieved some excellent results in both fleets; Murray Hampshire delivered a consistent series in the main fleet securing 7th overall, with all his results in the top eleven (if we ignore his discarded black flag in race five), while Robert Masterman finished two places behind in 9th having peaked with a 3rd in the first race.

Three PSC members finished in the top 10 overall in the regatta fleet; Emma Hanley (3rd), James Hammett (6th) and Emily Walters (10th). Emma and James won a race a piece, with Emma counting an impressive 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 3rd for her overall score.
