The ILCA/Laser* is an Olympic class, single-handed, one-design dinghy using a common hull design with three interchangeable rigs of different sail areas. It was designed in 1970 and more than 200,000 have been produced.
The ILCA/Laser fleet is one of the largest and most active fleets at Papercourt, with around 100 registered boats, of which 25 race regularly in the various race series at the Club.
We also have good representation and good results at many open meetings in and around the south-east, and often have representation at the Inlands, the Club Championships, the Nationals, the Europeans and the Youth World Championships.
At Papercourt there are Laser sailors of all standards, from complete beginners to ex-National and UKLA Club Champions, so whatever your standard is, there will be someone for you to race against.
To help improve your skills we hold winter and summer Laser coaching days at the Club, run by RYA qualified coaches – free for Papercourt members.
*Following litigation, in 2019 the International Laser Class Association revoked the licence of the European builder of Laser dinghies and appointed a new builder. However the former builder owns the Laser name and logo. The Association have therefore re-named the boat the ILCA. The Laser Standard, Radial and 4.7 rigs are now referred to as ILCA 7, 6 and 4 respectively. Nothing has changed in the design of the boats or rigs.
